Matched Betting: Your Top 10 Questions Answered

1. What is matched betting?

Matched betting is a way of making money online most commonly in the UK but also in other parts of Europe and the world, notably however, not in the USA. It relies on the use of promotional offers from online bookmakers. The process involves signing up to a bookmaker, placing a qualifying bet to receive a free bet, then extracting profit from the free bet by finding a bet with close matching odds on a betting exchange and covering all other outcomes with a lay bet. This removes risk and allows you to pre-calculate the outcome.

Matched betting requires a minimal investment, as little as £50, but the more funds you start with the quicker you can increase your profits. You can either do a few offers now and then to make a little extra cash for something, part-time to supplement your income or as a full-time job where it can provide a decent salary. It is fairly simple to start, with a low-medium learning curve.

Matched betting has been talked about in newspapers and online articles, and has become increasingly popular in the last 4-5 years and although it’s likely to be around for many years to come, you never know, so it’s best to take advantage of it whilst you can.

2. I don’t know anything about betting or sports, can I still do matched betting?

You sure can! Put it this way. I barely knew the rules to football and had never bet on anything in my life but I’ve done pretty well for myself. You will pick up any relevant sports related knowledge along the way but honestly, you don’t need to know anything about sports; in fact, the less attached you are the better, as you won’t be tempted to forego laying the bet on the off chance that your favourite team wins and end up losing money.

As far as betting goes, you will learn the basics through attempting some simple offers, which you will be guided through with instructional videos. You don’t need to be good at maths or technically minded, the software does all the work for you. It’s really quite simple once you know how.

3. If it’s so easy, why isn’t everyone doing matched betting?

A question I find usually comes from older people or those who have never attempted to make money online in some form and believe it’s one of those ‘too good to be true’ things. It’s good to be sceptical but honestly, this question could also be put to anyone who is very wealthy. It’s pretty simple to create wealth when it comes down to it, it’s just not everyone knows how or is willing to put the work in to do it. Even if they think they are. It’s the same with matched betting. In the grand scheme of things, not that many people have heard of it. Also, when it comes to it, making a good, consistent earning from it, requires dedication and planning. It needs to be treated like a business, not a hobby.

4. Is matched betting legal?

Yes, of course! I wouldn’t be promoting it otherwise. Do check your own countries regulations surrounding gambling however as they may differ.

5. What if the bookmaker finds out?

They have! Most if not all bookmakers are aware of matched betting and know that people are using their offers as part of it. Because it’s completely legal though, there’s nothing they can do. However, that’s not to say that they welcome it. In fact, as it’s within their rights, most bookmakers have put measures place to try and weed-out matched betters and ban them from their website. Don’t worry though, as you will learn, there are countermeasures to ensure this doesn’t happen.

6. How much can I earn from matched betting?

How long is a piece of string? Sorry, not very helpful I know. It’s something that my Grandad always said to me when I asked a pretty open-ended question or he just didn’t want to give me one! True all the same though. It really depends.

To give you an idea, I would say a reasonable and very achievable monthly income from matched betting is around £300-500 a month. Certainly, nothing to sniff at and doesn’t require too much time. You could comfortably do this whilst working or raising a child for example. There are a lot of people making more however, £500 to £1,000. Obviously this requires more time commitment. There are also plenty of people earning £1,000-£4,000. You really have to start treating it like a business at this point and will definitely require doing it part-time to full-time. To put this into perspective, since Profit Accumulator started around 5 years ago, although some of these people will have joined later, over 25 members have made over 100k from matched betting, 10 people have made over 200k and 2 have even earned over 500k!

Side note. Another great benefit for matched betters, in the UK at least and probably some other countries, is that it falls under the gambling umbrella, therefore you don’t need to pay income tax. So if you wanna earn some extra pennies and stick it to the man at the same time, matched betting is the way to go.

7. Can I do matched betting in country X?

Unfortunately, all I can say with certainty is that it can be done in the UK and Ireland. I’m pretty sure that there are many other countries around the world where it is possible with one notable exception, that being the USA. I do believe that legislation surrounding sports betting is changing across more and more states though.

What it comes down to is; does the bookmaker allow you to sign up? Do the terms of their offer allow you to take part? I have noticed that the majority of signup offers I’ve done, were only been eligible for people in the UK and Ireland. So either way, there’s definitely not as much potential for long-term profits if you’re outside of the UK.

That being the case, I would recommend looking at another opportunity for making money. Online Arbitrage or Dropshipping are both worth looking into.

8. Is matched betting really risk-free?

Yes and no, but mostly yes. Let me explain.

As you progress in your matched betting journey, you will come across slightly more complicated offers that aren’t necessarily risk-free but very low risk. They aren’t necessary but can form a major part of your continued profits with matched betting. As always however, you know exactly what the outcome will be should you not gain anything from the offer. What any seasoned matched better will tell you though, is that the wins you will no doubt get from these types of offers will far outweigh any of the minor losses from unsuccessful ones. So whether this could really be classed as ‘risk’ is up to you.

Also, there is always the risk of human error. If you make a mistake whilst placing a bet, for example put in the wrong amount, then you could lose money. However, there are ways to rectify most mistakes made whilst placing bets that will ensure you don’t suffer too much.

9. Does it cost anything? How much do I need to start matched betting?

Ah, the eternal question. To give a short answer, yes, you need some money to start matched betting. Firstly, you need money to place the bets and start making profit. Secondly, you’ll need to set aside £17 per month for membership to Profit Accumulator. More on that in the next question.

As to how much exactly you need to get started, honestly, there’s no single answer for this which I’m sure you’re bummed about but that’s not the point. The point is, it’s pretty flexible. You can start with £50 or you can start with £5,000. The two things that will determine how much you should start with are; How much do you have to start with? And how quickly do you want to increase your ‘bank’?

It’s always recommended to have a decent bank whilst continuing with matched betting, as this allows you to attempt high odds offers which provide greater profits and also to be doing many offers consecutively. With that in mind, the less you start with, the longer it will take to build a decent bank and get to a point where you can really start enjoying the profits.

On the other hand, the more you are able to start with, the faster you can progress through the offers and see a substantial income from it. Bear in mind however, how much time you actually have. There’s no use putting a load of money into it if you only have a few hours a week to spare.

10. Where do I find offers for matched betting?

Great question! And the one you should be asking if you’re thinking about giving this thing a go. So the offers can be found manually by trawling through bookies and looking through their promotions, the problem is checking through the terms and conditions, wagering requirements, time frames etc, of each promotion, to determine if they’re worth doing. It would be very time-consuming and kinda boring to be honest. So that’s why the best place to find these offers is through Profit Accumulator. They are a matched betting membership site who provide you with all the training, support, software and tools for matched betting, not least of which is a constantly updated list of available offers that are actually worth doing.

I’ve been using their site since I dipped my toe in a few years ago and I’ve seen them always updating and improving their service. Offering new tools to make matched betting easier than ever. Their forum has a tonne of active members as well which offers a support network that is vital if you plan to do matched betting long-term. As an existing member, I can offer a free trial to anyone who wants to check it out. You can sign up and go through the training to complete a simple offer that you can make £45 or more on. If it’s not for you, you can cancel straight away without any charges.
